The number of bankruptcies initiated for both companies and individuals in Switzerland increased last year by 6.6% compared to 2021, according to figures released by the Federal Office of Statistics yesterday.
The greatest increases were in the cantons of Fribourg, Basel-City, Graubünden and Lucerne where rates increased by between 15 and 20 per cent.
The cantons of Ticino, Bern and Zurich also saw ‘notable’ increases.
On the opposite end of the scale, the cantons of Vaud and Geneva saw a reduction in the number of reported bankruptcies.
In total, throughout the country, the number of registered bankruptcies in 2022 was just over 15,000.
The Federal Office of Statistics says that the increase in bankruptcies is significant and is twice as high as the average rate recorded during the five years preceding the Covid-19 pandemic.
