An automated system designed to cut traffic jams on the autoroutes is being rolled out on the A1 between Geneva and Lausanne.
It’s been many years in preparation. New electric signs have been installed and a computer system has been linked up to control speed limits.
The idea is, if the system detects a section of slow or stopped traffic – the signs along the road will change to slow traffic heading for the blockage.
The system has been managed by people for the past few months- but it will be handed over to a computer full time. The first section under full automation will be between Lausanne and Yverdon, but the road between Geneva and Lausanne will be automated later this year.
