Antibiotic resistance infections up

The number of antibiotic resistant infections is climbing in Switzerland. Figures from the Health Office show over the last 15 years there have been more cases of resistant infections, such as E.coli.

Doctors are clear about the cause, the over prescription of antibiotics for many years. Although Switzerland’s record is reasonably good, it has a relatively low level of antibiotic use. But more are prescribed in the French and Italian speaking areas than the German areas.

There are more tools available to medics about antibiotic use in an effort to make sure the appropriate drug is used to guarantee the long-term effectiveness, says the Federal Health Office.
