Ankle bracelets will be able to be tracked across cantons

There are efforts to step up protection for victims of domestic violence.

Starting early next year, electronic monitoring of offenders wearing ankle bracelets will be strengthened nationwide.

Currently those who’ve been ordered to have their movements tracked can escape surveillance by leaving their home canton.

The Electronic Monitoring association says its 22 member cantons have approved a new 24/7 national surveillance center, along with procedures to help local authorities shift from tracking to active intervention.

Vaud State Councillor Vassilis Venizelos says the goal is clear - preventing femicides.

A Zurich pilot project showed the system works, but also underscored the need for coordination across cantonal borders.
