Amnesty International criticises Switzerland

A report by the human rights organisation, Amnesty International is slamming Switzerland.

It says racism is everywhere, the right to abortion is under threat, the country is not doing enough to tackle climate change and is inconsistent in defending human rights globally.

The group references a UN recommendation that Switzerland should ban racial profiling by authorities and set up an independent complaints mechanism which can provide supervisory powers over police forces and it also says the way the country is treating asylum seekers from Ukraine differently from those from other countries is discriminatory.

It also says while Switzerland is taking a tough stance against Russia on human rights, it ignores others – like Saudi Arabia and China.

Amnesty says access to abortion is threatened and points at two attempts by the Swiss People’s Party to restrict the procedure and the rejection by the Green Party to decriminalize it.
