Aigle says no to a new pedestrianised market square

Following a referendum launched earlier this year, the population of Aigle voted ‘no’ this weekend to a loan for a pedestrianised market-square.

The redevelopment would have included the market square itself, as well as the adjacent streets and crossroads, and cost CHF 9.7million.

Former municipal councilor Yvan Prêtre explained to the 24 Heures newspaper that the need for adjustments in Aigle was not rejected, but rather the price, which he went on to describe as “astronomical”.

In this weekend’s votes, 1,349 voted for the project. 1,617 voted against.

This will not be the end of the project altogether, but rather it will now be reconsidered before being put back to vote by the population in the future.
