A1 use largely for leisure

A1 autoroute

A new survey may prompt a rethink on the expansion of the A1 autoroute between Geneva and Lausanne.

The CHF 5bn to add an extra lane in each direction is now going to a vote after campaigners said it will only attract more cars and the money could be used better elsewhere.

The survey by the consultancy 6t suggests that 40% of all traffic on the road is for leisure. Commuters make up just 26% of the road use.

The consultancy says that spending such a large amount of money on leisure may not be worth it and perhaps a rail alternative would be better.

In the past it’s floated the idea of a new line between Lausanne and Geneva, but passing through the Pays de Gex to serve frontaliers.

6t admit that would also cost billions - but will be more sustainable.
