10 km tailbacks at Gotthard yesterday

It wasn’t unexpected – major tailbacks at the southern end of the Gotthard Tunnel formed yesterday afternoon and into the evening.

Queues peaked at ten kilometres – leading to delay of around two hours for those returning home.

But it wasn’t just the end of the Easter break – the tunnel was busy throughout the holiday period.

There were jams over the weekend as well.

The havoc has again raised the debate about crossing the Alps. Many ask if charging a toll would be a good idea to limit traffic – and some stuck in the lines told the press that non-Swiss cars should be charged more.
