Switzerland’s first festival of Irish culture and arts is taking place in Fribourg between 6 - 8 October 2023; a weekend of Irish music, dance, films, food, literature and public lectures, featuring Irish authors, artists and academics. The literary programme includes best-selling Irish writer John Boyne, author of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and 19 other novels, as well as Nuala O’Connor, Anne Griffin, Sarah Moore Fitzgerald and Padraig Rooney.
The public lectures will be delivered by Shane Walshe and Anne-Claire Michoux of the Swiss Centre of Irish Studies (all in English)
The festival welcome hub will be in the Equilibre Theatre and the events will take place in the following venues: Point de Vue, Rex Cinema, University of Fribourg, La Spirale Jazz Club, Banshees Lodge, Aula of Collège St. Michel and the Hôpital des Bourgeois. Popular Fribourg restaurants Belvedère and Le Cafe Mondial will also be offering Irish cuisine during the festival.
“We want everyone to have the chance experience Irish culture,” festival director Clare O’Dea said.
Legendary Irish party band The Dixie Micks will perform in La Spirale on Saturday night. The Celtic Cello, the creation of Bern-based Irish composer Clíodhna Ní Aodáin, will be a unique musical experience.
Fribourg photographer Romano Riedo will exhibit photos from his Irish Moments series at Rex Cinema. Northern Ireland and the Irish language will be represented in the film programme by Young Plato and The Quiet Girl respectively.
