Carouge Character : Agenda 21 - No Waste !

Listen Again

Wednesday, 1 September 2021 - 6 minutes

The City of Carouge is committed to becoming the first zero waste city in Switzerland! This project “Zéro Déchets” first got off the ground in April 2018 when it was proposed to Carouge by the association Zero Waste Switzerland, with support of passionate locals. Carouge launched some educational programmes to support families and individuals in Carouge on how to go about cutting waste for food and drink, cosmetics, hygiene products and clothing.

Also, there's an initiative to encourage visitors to bring their own tupperware when ordering take-out in Carouge. If you head to any of the restaurants below, feel free to bring along your own take-out box, to reduce the use of single-use packaging. This also applies to many of the local bakers, butchers and market stalls in Carouge. Just say "Zero Déchets" when you order.

Through programmes such as these, as well as composting initiatives we talk about in this podcast, Carouge has seen a huge reduction in waste, and is promising to redirect it to other associations throughout the city. You can register to see which associations might benefit, and vote on your favourite, at carougezerodechet.ch - for every person that registers, they'll donate CHF 1 to charity.

Although the ultimate goal is NO waste, it's important to simply REDUCE and do so immediately. Be like Carouge!
