If there are power cuts this winter there be a popular uprising leading to riots and looting.

While such a scenario is deemed unlikely, it was discussed at a meeting of the Cantonal Departments of Justice and Police.

The head of the meeting, Fredy Fässler, told the Blick newspaper over the weekend, that authorities have to be ready if the power cuts mean the streets are plunged into darkness, electronic payment systems stop working and heating systems shut down.

It was also stressed that critical infrastructure need to have generators ready – such as hospitals and police stations.

There are also plans to make sure people have access to cash if the ATM system fails.
