More people used the train in the first three months of the year than ever before.
The Union of Public Transport released figures showing there were 5.22 billion passenger kilometres travelled between January and March this year, breaking the record set during the same period in 2019, just before the pandemic hit.
Compared to last year, which was still being affected by covid – passenger numbers are up 34%.
But possibly reflecting the economic downturn – freight traffic is down 4%.
