Weekend storms hit large areas

Major storms hit large areas of the country yesterday afternoon causing flooding and hail damage.

Cantons Vaud, Fribourg and Bern were particularly badly hit.

In Gruyères around 20mm of rain fell in 10 minutes – hail damaged cars.

But yesterday wasn’t the only storm. Delémont in canton Jura was hit Saturday afternoon with massive hail stones around 8 cm wide.

Meteorologist Vincent Devantay told the Tribune de Geneve that there is so much energy in the atmosphere at the moment due to the heat, storms can take on a strong intensity very quickly.
