Voters reject 10m, but accept tougher military rules

Voters have rejected the ‘No to 10 Million’ initiative. But commentators say the strength of the yes vote is still a cause of concern for the government.

The vote failed early in counting as it couldn’t get the majority of cantons, even before many had declared.

13 cantons said no, as did over 53% of voters.

Although the government is relieved at the result - many say more needs to be done to allay the fears of the population about immigration.

Those living in the cities clearly rejected the proposal, with 65% throwing it out in Geneva. More rural cantons showed strong support.

In the other national vote, the people have approved tougher rules for civilian service.

53% said the rules need to change, but French speaking cantons roundly rejected the move.

The reform is designed to reduce the number of people switching out of military service, with supporters arguing it will strengthen army staffing at a time of growing security concerns in Europe.

Under the new law, civilian service applicants will face stricter obligations and longer commitments.
