One person died and two others are in a serious condition in neighbouring France in two separate, but related instances.
Both involved drivers performing dangerous manoeuvres on the street, such as donuts or bikers pulling wheelies – often referred to as ‘Urban Rodeos’.
The first incident was in Evian. A 38-year-old volunteer firefighter tried to stop a group of youths pulling the stunts near his fire station at 6am. A 19-year-old driver drove into him. He suffered a crushed chest and serious head injuries. He has been arrested.
The second case in Gaillard, near Annemasse, claimed the life of a 23-year-old. Two groups started fighting and the victim was again rammed by a car – he was killed instantly. One female occupant of the ramming car was seriously injured and is in a critical condition.
The driver has been arrested for murder.
French prosecutors are discussing new laws to fight the menace of urban rodeos – including destruction of the vehicles involved.
