The supermarket chain Migros has lost a court case on allowing an unstaffed shop to be open on Sundays.
The shop has been open near the Zurich main strain station for the last two years. It has no staff on site – but only automatic check outs.
The company believed this was enough form it to get around strict Sunday opening laws.
But even a so-called unmanned shop needed some people. The bread was fresh – so that needs to be baked – and there are security staff on hand if needed.
Bakers and security workers are exempt from Sunday working laws.
But the union Unia took the matter to court, saying if the shop wasn’t open, there wouldn’t be the need for staff.
The local court agreed and revoked its permit. But Migros can still appeal to the Federal Court – until the process is completed – the shop will stay open.
