The United Nations has marked a new milestone in Geneva. Secretary-General António Guterres and Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis have inaugurated the UN Gateway, a new visitor centre set to open in May.
The 2,000 square metre site will welcome up to 200,000 people a year, offering public access from the Place des Nations without security checks.
Visitors will be immersed in multilateralism, including a replica of the UN General Assembly.
Originally slated for 2023, the project was delayed and scaled back due to rising costs.
Backed by Geneva banker Ivan Pictet, the centre is intended as what Guterres calls “a gateway to peace.”
