Thousands of Ukrainian refugees in Switzerland could soon gain longer-term residency rights, but the change is raising concerns over the cost to cantons and municipalities.
From March next year around 46,000 Ukrainians will become eligible for B permits. Authorities in canton Vaud say the move could add around CHF 100m to the canton’s budget as refugees with B permits qualify for higher levels of social assistance.
The federal government is now examining whether those benefits should remain aligned with those received by Swiss citizens.
