Two anti-abortion initiatives fall

Two anti-abortion initiatives have failed as campaigners have not reached the required 100,000 signatures.

Both had been organised by the youth wing of the Swiss People’s Party.

One called on doctors to take at least a day before deciding on whether to carry out an abortion – there would be exemptions in the case the mother’s life is in danger.

The other would have put more controls on late term abortions. These are allowed if the mother’s life is in danger or of the child will be severely disabled. The initiative would have disallowed that last case.

Neither reached the right number of signatures within the time limit. The head of the SVP Youth Wing, 28-year-old David Trachsel says they may have miscalculated by having two initiatives at the same time.
