Thousands demand Gaza ceasefire in Bern

Thousands marched in Bern over the weekend to express their solidarity with Gaza and demanding the Federal Council back a ceasefire in the region.

It’s thought around 10,000 attended, although organisers claimed it was twice that number.

Several organisations were present, including the trade unions, the Green Party and Amnesty International.

The joint call was for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

The deputy leader of the Social Democrat Party, Cédric Wermuth, said he was tired of hiding behind neutrality although that comment elicited some boos from the crowd.

The police were visible throughout the demonstration – but there were no major incidents.
