The Federal Council is proposing a counter initiative aimed at making sure cash will always remain a medium of exchange in the country.
A group called ‘Swiss Freedom Movement’ wants to have it written into the constitution that the Swiss franc will be the national currency in the form of notes and coins.
The government says it believes the wording on the initiative is imprecise, so it has proposed to parliament that the existing law, which already says the franc is the national currency, should be inserted into the constitution.
That means any changes will have to go to the vote in the future.
