A new Franco-Swiss survey highlights clear differences in political attitudes between the two countries.
The new study, by global market research firm, Ipsos, shows strong support for direct democracy on both sides: 86% in Switzerland and 79% in France back regular referendums.
But views on the role of the state diverge, with 62% of French respondents wanting more government intervention, compared with 34% in Switzerland.
France is also more pessimistic about the future, as 69% expect the next generation to be worse off, versus 49% in Switzerland.
Trust in politicians is low in both countries, especially in France, where only 8% say they trust leaders to manage the economy.
