Switzerland pledges extra 60 million francs for Syria

An additional 60 million francs is to be released by the Swiss government to help people affected by the conflict in Syria and the wider region.

The funding was announced at the seventh Brussels conference on aid for the future of Syria and the countries of the region, organized by the European Union.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs said that the funds are in addition to 8.5 million francs allocated in March as part of an aid package put in place following the earthquake in Syria and Turkey.

The funding will cover emergency aid projects on the ground as well as assistance to improve the protection of civilians and strengthen the resilience of the population.

In Syria, 15.3 million people are currently dependent on humanitarian aid.

In addition, aid is also needed to reach the more than 5.4 million Syrian refugees hosted in neighbouring countries, such as Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.
