Swiss universities benefit from US brain drain

Swiss universities are benefitting from the grim mood in higher education in the United States.

President Donald Trump continues his crusade against science, slashing research funding and attacking so-called “wokeness” and Marxism.

His latest move, the “Big Beautiful Bill,” proposes tax hikes on elite institutions.

Top academics are leaving. Historians Timothy Snyder and Marci Shore, along with fascism expert Jason Stanley, have moved from Yale to Canada. Switzerland – as well as the rest of Europe, is seizing the moment.

Former NASA official Thomas Zurbuchen, now at ETH Zurich, recently urged Swiss universities to capitalize on U.S. instability.

On Friday, ETH in Zurich and EPFL in Lausanne, announced eight new professor appointments — six from U.S. institutions.

Zurbuchen said, “We’re hiring people today that we probably wouldn’t have hired two or three years ago.”
