Swiss EU fee may triple

There are still hopes Switzerland will seal a new deal with the European Union by the end of the year - but there are still some sticking points.

The Federal Council is due to take stock of the current situation at its meeting on Wednesday.

Weekend press reports suggest that amount that will have to be paid to the EU for its social cohesion fund could triple to CHF 450m.

The figures have been calculated by the NZZ newspaper using the same methods on how Norway’s fee is worked out.

The government is still holding out for a bespoke deal on immigration – and while sources say progress is being made – don’t expect miracles.

Both those points are likely to be unacceptable to those against an EU deal – especially the Swiss People’s Party.
