Restaurant charges for napkin cleaning

A restaurant in the Bern Old Town says it will charge customers an extra 4 francs for cleaning their napkin if they leave it on the plate at the end of the meal.

The Bonbec restaurant’s menu clearly states, in German and English, that they clean the napkins themselves and any left on the plate will carry the extra charge.

The owner explained to the press that they use curry sauce and turmeric is a nightmare to clean.

The restaurant association, GastroSuisse, says the charge is legal as it is clearly communicated before the customer orders.
