Rents climb across the country

Rents continue to climb. Last year the cost of renting a home went up by 4.7%, according to the Homegate Rent Index.

The increase is the highest since the survey began in 2009.

While rents were up across the country, cantons Zurich and Schwyz were the worst affected. Zurich attracts workers – while the rises in the mountain canton of Schwyz are down to many moving out of Zurich.

The main problem is supply. Not enough new homes are being built and demand remains very strong.

Homegate warns the situation is unlikely to improve in the short term. There are very few new construction projects planned and higher interest rates mean there are now other investment opportunities.
