Police warn of increased cyber scams

Geneva police are warning there’s an increase in cyber scams at the moment and internet users should be careful.

There are two main methods. Scammers have the ability to scan email accounts and spot messages talking about money transfers and then send an authentic looking message saying the IBAN number the money needs to be sent to has changed.

Police say always check by phone if the message is genuine.

The other method is a fake support message from Microsoft or another support company asking to call a phone number. Scammers then take control of the computer. Never call the number and reboot your PC. If the message reappears, take the machine to an authorized dealer – say the police.
