Plans to charge tunnel toll angers Ticino

An idea to charge a toll to go through the Gotthard Tunnel is triggering anger in canton Ticino.

The head of Ticino Turismo, Simone Patelli, says it would discriminate against the canton and would be disadvantaged against other holiday destinations.

A view shared by many others, including the president of the Locarno Film Festival, Marco Solari, who says the Ticinese will ‘go to the barricades.’

But others say the tourist situation in the southern canton is not being helped by the large queues anyway – and locals are also stuck.

Some are calling for exemptions for locals as well as a fast track for workers.

The head of the Swiss People’s Party, Marco Chiesa – himself from Ticino, says there should, be a toll that covers all major routes through the Alps – but Swiss drivers could be compensated, so the charge is really only paid by tourists.
