Some politicians want to closed a loophole that allows dual French/Swiss nationals to escape national service in Switzerland.
Currently, a French national could opt to do the one-day training required in France – and then that allows them not to join the Swiss army as it’s forbidden to allow anyone who’s served in a foreign army to join.
Some say that’s unfair.
The proposal is to make sure the commitment to another country is comparable – if not, they have to serve here.
It’s unclear which way the vote in parliament could go. Others say it may jeopardize international relations.
