Residents are leaving Switzerland's most expensive cities in record numbers, swapping Geneva, Zurich and Basel for cheaper neighbouring cantons
New studies from UBS show Geneva losing around 1,400 residents a year to Vaud, Valais and Fribourg, while Zurich sheds 3,500 to Aargau, Schaffhausen and Thurgau.
But the housing pressure is not easing — nearly 10,300 new arrivals from abroad settle in Geneva each year, and almost 19,000 in Zurich.
UBS warns tenants in the big urban centres can hardly expect rents to fall, as foreign workers continue to cluster where the jobs are.
