People back new EU talks

As Switzerland prepares to enter a new round of talks with the EU – known as 'Bilateral III' – the people seem to be behind closer links with Europe.

The survey carried out by GfS Bern on behalf of various businesses shows there’s an understanding that this country’s fortunes are tied to the EU.

Even amongst Swiss People’s Party voters, traditionally the most Eurosceptic, there’s an acceptance that closer links are necessary. Only 16% of those voters are totally against the idea.

The wider population acknowledge it’s important to secure access to Switzerland’s biggest market. 85% want that and are prepared to make compromises, including accepting judgements from European courts and paying benefits to EU citizens living in the country.

Business owners are pleased with the results. The head of the manufacturer’s association Swissmem, says they now have it in black and white that the talks are supported by the people.

Voters will have the final say on any agreement struck with the EU.
