It’s unnecessary to spend CHF 54m on a new footbridge across the lake, according to a campaign group fighting for better transport facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
The group active-TrafiC says it will be sufficient to close one lane on the existing Mont Blanc Bridge which will allow space for riders and walkers.
The group points out there is already an overarching policy to cut car traffic in Geneva and the average number of cars on the current bridge has been falling for many years.
They say all efforts should be made to use existing infrastructure.
The proposed pedestrian bridge would run to a slight angle to the current bridge, ending in the Jardin Anglais.
The city council will be voting on the new bridge in the next few weeks. If it gives the go-ahead, the campaign group says it may launch a referendum.
