In Neuchâtel, the constant sound of bells could soon quiet down.
The city’s General Council is reviewing new police regulations that would let authorities limit how often, and when, bells can ring.
Currently, property owners can sound them freely, and some go overboard, like the Temple de la Coudre, which rings all night.
The proposal comes after repeated complaints from residents losing sleep over the noise. A decision is expected sometime in 2026.
Bell ringing has a long history in Switzerland, and as the country escaped most of the devastation of the Second World War, there are more bells from the Middle Ages here than neighbouring countries.
