Neuchatel to go dark overnight

The city of Neuchâtel will be going dark every night between 1am and 5am. The city council has unanimously agreed to turn off all public lighting during that time.

It’s not necessarily to cut costs – although that would also happen – but it’s to protect nocturnal wildlife.

The city has several kilometers of lake shore on one side and forest on the other. It's important to protect the animals that live there – according to the councilor in charge of sustainable development, Mauro Moruzzi.

But there are some exceptions right in the middle of the city where LED lighting and motion detectors will be used to maintain security.
