The head of the Swiss food giant Nestlé has been sacked after an office affair.

The 63-year-old veteran, Laurent Freixe, spent nearly four decades at the company and took the top job only a year ago.

He was found to have had an undisclosed romantic relationship with a direct subordinate which is clear misconduct under Nestlé’s Code of Business Conduct.

The board say the decision was “necessary” to uphold the company’s values.

Nestlé has already named a successor: Philipp Navratil aged 48, a Swiss national who rose through the ranks since 2001 and most recently led Nespresso.

He takes over immediately.
