A large chunk of the Birch glacier above the Valaisian village of Blatten has crashed down, causing a massive flow of ice, rock snow and water.
The mountain has been under observation for the last couple of weeks as a major collapse was expected. The village remains empty as residents have been told to leave.
About 9 million tonnes broke free yesterday.
It’s unlikely the falls have stopped yet – the glacier continues to move at 10 meters a day.
