Many children in caregiving role

Many young people in Switzerland are caregivers for a loved one – but often they won’t actually realise it.

Canton Geneva is working to highlight how being supportive to a family member can affect their daily lives and their own wellbeing.

Figures from Kalaidos University in Zurich show that 8% of those aged between 10 to 15 are in a caregiving role.

Véronique Petoud is the Geneva delegate for care givers. She told the RTS that young people see it as normal to regularly help someone in their family and so often don’t recognise the role they’re fulfilling. However, it can lead to school absences and isolation.
