Laser pointers still hitting aircraft

Laser attacks against pilots in Swiss airspace are on the rise, according to the Federal Office of Civil Aviation's 2024 safety report.

A total of 189 incidents were recorded last year - 176 involving planes and 13 helicopters - compared to just 52 in 2020.

Officials warn the attacks pose serious risks, particularly during takeoff and landing.

Helicopter pilots, often operating alone, are especially vulnerable during low-altitude missions or hospital landings.

he culprits are typically private individuals using illegal lasers purchased online, says the aviation office.

Most plane incidents occur near Geneva and Zurich. SWISS International Airlines describes them as isolated, but stresses that crews must alert air traffic control immediately, triggering a police response.
