Initiative for crèche places for all in Geneva

Campaigners are launching an initiative to give all children in Geneva a crèche place – with the funding coming from companies based on the number of employees.

A place at crèche costs CHF 40,000 a year per child.

Those behind the plan say it will be a step toward gender equality as it’s normally the mother who has to stop working to look after the child and there’s no logical reason that while school is free, pre-school isn’t.

Local businesses are worried about the extra cost. The Federation of Businesses in the Swiss Romande says there is a concern about the lack of child care places, but the cost of labour in Geneva is already very high.

Campaigners have 4 months to collect 5 and a half thousand signatures.
