Increasing pressure on intensive care beds

The number of people in intensive care wards is rising – and the average age of patients is falling.

Earlier this week, Zurich University Hospital had only once spare place.

The Deputy Head of Intensive Care, Peter Steiger, says the situation is serious. He says a quarter of current patients are under 50.
Nationwide, intensive care beds are 71% full.

A similar rise is being noticed in Bern – more patients in intensive care, and getting younger.

But there are hopes with warmer weather coming and increasing vaccinations those numbers will start to come down in the next few weeks.
