Green Party wants to ban cars and stop road building

The Green Party is planning to introduce a series of bills in parliament which will ban all new roads being built from 2030 – and no new vehicles powered by internal combustion engines by 2023.

The party says greenhouse gases from cars and trucks account for 30% of all emissions – and although they are decreasing, the figures are still higher than 30 years ago.

As for roads, the party say it’s been long proven that building new roads doesn’t cut congestion – it just leads to more traffic.

It says it’s important that a ban on new petrol and diesel powered cars is brought in as quickly as possible, as cars already on the roads will still be able to be used.

The average lifespan for a car in Switzerland is around eight years – then they tend to go abroad.
