Salaries for federal government workers have breached CHF 130,000 on average for the first time.
The figures include basic salary and a local allowance, but not bonuses.
The Federal Human Resources Office points out that the government employs people with unique skills.
A recent study by the University of Lausanne determined a government worker earns around 11% more than a similar role in the private sector. But another study by the consultancy PwC showed the levels were comparable.
Eitherway, the government says it wants to get pay under control and is looking to save CHF 100m on pay.
Unions and staff associations say the cuts will do more harm than good.
