Govt says we need to cut gas use by 15%

We need to cut gas use by 15% to secure supplies over the winter.

At a press conference yesterday, the Federal Council urged people to think how they can save power – such as switching off unused appliances and working from home.

The 15% target is the same that’s been set by the European Union.

Companies that can use oil instead of gas are being asked to do so - although this could attract high CO2 taxes. But the government says it’s looking at those rules and they could be changed.

There could be legal restrictions imposed. Such as public buildings may have their heating turned down and the use of outside gas heaters could be banned.
