Govt proposes to cut TV licencing fee to CHF 300

The government says it wants to cut the TV licencing fee to CHF 300 a year, down from CHF 335, by 2029.

The hope is the cut will be enough to fend off an initiative by the Swiss People’s Party which aims to slash the fee to CHF 200.

The government says that’s too much and the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation would not be able to provide a solid journalistic service for all language regions.

The government’s counter proposal is to gradually cut the fee from 2027 and get to CHF 300 by 2029.

The proposal now goes to parliament – which may come up with its own idea.
