Gotthard road tunnel closed

Only adding to the problems of crossing the Alps – the Gotthard Road Tunnel is closed at the moment and likely to stay closed for most of the day.

A press release says the problem is a crack in the roof. One driver says he saw concrete fall onto the road.

The tunnel was closed yesterday afternoon, immediately triggering major traffic jams at both ends.

Cars were stuck deep inside and had to turn around in the tunnel.

Queues formed on the Gotthard Pass as drivers sought another way home.

The road tunnel was already particularly busy as the train tunnel is also closed.
