Geneva wants monitoring of Airbnb rentals

Geneva authorities want to get a better grip on the issue of short-term rentals on Airbnb.

An investigation by Swiss Television suggests there are more than 200 apartments being rented, taking them off the traditional housing market.

The law does allow private homes to be rented for 90 days a year – but the report suggests many are constantly available at elevated rates. One studio was listed at CHF 2,700 a month. The market rent would be closer to CHF 1,000.

The canton wants to compile a register of homes on the rental site.

Geneva minister, Antonio Hodgers, says a record would be able to keep track on those are renting out more than one home.
