Geneva to allow more bike red light turns

Geneva is going to allow more traffic lights where cyclists can turn on red.

Following a law change in January last year, there are 160 sets of lights across the canton where cyclists can turn right when the lights are red – but there will be a further 80.

The canton says after observing the impact of the new rules, its clear there’s no danger to other road users – especially pedestrians – which gives the green light to expanding the programme.

Cyclists can only turn on a red light if there is a sign allowing it – a yellow bike symbol on a black background – and must always give way to pedestrians.
