There are calls for stronger regulation of e-cigarettes after 40% of retailers tested in Geneva sold the devices to young people.
The canton released the details of a series of test purchases carried out in March. Many retailers didn’t bother asking for proof of age and two knowingly sold e-cigarettes to under age people.
Shop owners found guilty of selling cigarettes to underage customers face fines from CHF 1,000 to CHF 80,000 – and could be banned from selling them altogether.
The campaign group Addiction Switzerland is praising the proactive approach of Geneva. It points out there are no age restrictions in canton Vaud – as well as many German speaking cantons. And some cantons that do have restrictions – there isn’t the legal option of carrying out test purchases
