Geneva resturants and hotel will have to accept cash

In Geneva, restaurants, cafés, and hotels will soon be required to accept cash payments.

The Grand Council passed the new rule on Friday by 53 votes to 35, with one abstention.

Supporters say the measure protects consumer choice and helps small businesses facing high electronic payment fees.

They also note that many older residents still prefer using cash. Opponents, including the Centre and Liberal parties, argued the law limits economic freedom and creates unequal rules between sectors.

The change amends Geneva’s law on catering and hospitality, responding to growing complaints about places that only accept card payments.
